(The “Campanone” of St. Peter’s Basilica)
Bill Fontana The Silent Echoes of a Monumental Sound Sculpture
Bells have been intimately tied to Christianity since its earliest days. Beyond marking the passage of time, their chimes call the faithful to prayer and assembly, accompanying humanity through moments of joy and sorrow.
Among all the bells of the world, the Campanone of St. Peter’s holds a unique position at the heart of Christianity.
Few, however, know that the Great Bell of St. Peter is always listening. It gathers the voices of those who suffer, the cries of nations torn by war, but also the whispers of hope and solidarity brought by pilgrims from every corner of the world.
Even when its chime is silent, the Campanone responds: it stands as a symbol of a dialogue that never ceases.
Bill Fontana has sought to give voice to this profound silence. Through technology, he has uncovered and given voice to the hidden echoes of the Great Bell. Even without the striking of its clapper, the Campanone of St. Peter reverberates with a universal message, bringing forth the language of peace and hope.
